Literacy Overview

At Mooroopna Park Primary School, we are proud to deliver a high-quality literacy program that provides every child with the strongest possible foundation for reading, writing and communication. All of our teaching and learning programs are aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0, integrating best practice informed by the latest research into the Science of Learning.

Across all year levels, every classroom teaches a consistent and comprehensive set of essential literacy components, including oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. This structured and systematic approach ensures students receive clear, explicit teaching that supports strong, long-term success.

A dedicated daily handwriting program is implemented throughout the school, helping students develop confidence, accuracy and automaticity in their writing.

Every literacy session includes a Daily Review, allowing students to revisit and strengthen previously taught skills. This routine supports the transfer of knowledge into long-term memory, enabling students to apply their learning confidently and independently.

At our school, we use explicit instruction because it is one of the most effective and research-supported approaches to teaching and learning. Explicit instruction means teachers clearly show students what they are learning, why it matters and how to do it. Skills are broken down into manageable steps, modelled by the teacher, practised together and then applied independently.
This approach removes guesswork and provides every child with the clarity and support they need to achieve success. It ensures no learner is left behind and helps all students build strong confidence as they master new skills.

This evidence-based approach is contributing to strong NAPLAN growth, supporting our students to become capable, confident learners who strive to achieve their personal best.
