Foundation Numeracy
In Foundation at Mooroopna Park Primary School, students build strong foundations in number, patterns, measurement, and space through a highly supportive and structured approach. Every lesson follows the “I Do, We Do, You Do” model of explicit instruction, where teachers model skills, guide students through shared practice, and then support them as they apply their learning independently.
Teachers use a wide range of strategies to check understanding throughout each lesson, ensuring that every child can confidently grasp new concepts before moving forward. Each session begins with a Daily Review, where students revisit and strengthen their understanding of previously learned material to ensure long-term retention.
From Semester 2, students also participate in a number fact recall program designed to build fluency and confidence with key number facts such as counting, addition, and subtraction. Concepts are broken into small, achievable steps, with hands-on manipulatives and clear worked examples used to support deep conceptual understanding.
This structured and supportive approach ensures all students develop confidence, fluency, and a love of learning mathematics from the very beginning of their schooling journey.
