Literacy in Years 3-6

Years 3–6 Literacy

In Years 3–6 at Mooroopna Park Primary School, students build on their strong literacy foundations and develop more advanced reading, writing, and spelling skills.

Students participate in daily explicit spelling and phonics instruction using the Spelling Mastery program, which helps them understand word patterns, develop accurate spelling, and apply this knowledge confidently in their writing.

Reading lessons focus on both fluency and knowledge building. Students engage in novel studies and knowledge-rich reading experiences that expand their vocabulary, deepen comprehension, and develop background knowledge across a range of topics. This approach helps students make meaningful connections between reading and the wider world.

Writing continues to be developed through the Talk For Writing approach, where students learn to plan, rehearse, and craft increasingly complex texts for different purposes and audiences. They explore persuasive, narrative, and informative writing, building control over language features and text structure.

A dedicated handwriting program continues to refine fluency and presentation, while Daily Review sessions ensure key skills are remembered and applied across learning areas.

Together, these elements support every student to become a confident, articulate, and thoughtful communicator—ready for success in secondary school and beyond.
