Numeracy in Years 3-6

Numeracy in Years 3-6

In Years 3 to 6 at Mooroopna Park Primary School, students apply their strong mathematical foundations to more complex concepts through explicit teaching. Each lesson follows a clear and structured approach where new skills are modelled by the teacher, practised together, and then applied independently.

Every session begins with a Daily Review, where students revisit prior learning to strengthen understanding and improve retention. This regular practice helps students make lasting connections across number, measurement, and problem-solving skills.

Learning is delivered at each student’s point of need, ensuring all students experience success and challenge at their level. Teachers break down concepts into small, manageable steps, checking for understanding through guided examples and supported practice.

Students have access to worked examples, visual supports, and meaningful manipulatives to deepen conceptual understanding. They also engage in regular number fact recall sessions, designed to increase fluency and automatic recall of key number facts, supporting efficient problem solving in more advanced tasks.
