Literacy in Years 1 & 2

Year 1/2 Literacy

In Year 1 and 2 at Mooroopna Park Primary School, students continue to strengthen their reading, writing, and spelling skills through a structured and supportive literacy program.

Daily phonics lessons using the Phormes program help students connect sounds to letters and develop confidence in reading and spelling. Students begin their reading journey with decodable books that directly match their phonics learning. Once they are confident with the code, they progress to ability-aligned quality texts that promote comprehension, fluency, and a love of reading.

Each day, students engage in a knowledge reading about engaging topics to build comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills.

Daily Review’s each day reinforce key knowledge and help students retain and apply what they’ve learned across different areas of learning.

Through the Talk For Writing approach, students learn to plan, rehearse, and write their own stories, persuasive pieces, and informative texts. A dedicated handwriting program continues to build fine motor skills, ensuring neat and fluent writing.

These practices ensure that every child develops strong reading, writing, and communication skills—laying the foundation for confident and successful lifelong learners.
