In Years 1 and 2 at Mooroopna Park Primary School, students continue to build confidence and enjoyment in mathematics through structured, hands-on learning experiences. Every lesson is taught using explicit teaching, following the “I Do, We Do, You Do” model. Teachers clearly model new skills, guide students through shared practice, and then support them as they apply their learning independently.
Each lesson begins with a Daily Review, where students revisit and practise previously taught content. This helps them strengthen memory, make connections between mathematical ideas, and develop automaticity in key number skills.
Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure students master one concept before moving on to the next. Teachers check understanding throughout lessons using questioning, discussion, and worked examples to ensure every student feels supported and successful.
Students are provided with meaningful manipulatives, such as counters, ten frames, and number lines, to explore mathematical ideas in a concrete way. As their understanding grows, they move from using materials to representing and solving problems with pictures, numbers, and symbols.
Students participate in a number fact recall program designed to strengthen their fluency with addition and subtraction facts. These sessions help students develop automatic recall, freeing up mental space to solve more complex problems.
